Brunold, considered a luminary in the field of historical Astrolabes, tells of the discussions of some monks who gathered in Rome on 24 December of the year 999. Their controversial discussions are about the beginnings of natural science in Christian-Latin Europe in tension between ancient and Arabic-Islamic traditions and the Christian faith. The focus is on the Astrolabe as a symbol of the awakening of occidental natural science in the early Middle Ages. During the discussions, an Astrolabe based on the so-called Carolingian Astrolabe from the 10th century will be presented. The meeting drafts an instruction manual with 13 applications. Pictorial plates and a detailed appendix make the book an introduction to the use of Astrolabes.
